How to Overlay Image with Atlas Map

  1. Convert the image to PNG
    • Open the TIF image file of interest with Paint.NET.
    • Save it as a PNG file in your working directory.
  2. Open a new document in CorelDRAW 2019
    • Hit CTRL + N to open new document.
    • Set the document name to be the same as the PNG file.
    • Save to your working directory with CTRL + SHIFT + S.
  3. Import the PNG file for the image
    • Hit CTRL + I to import. Use default settings.
    • Rotate the image about 90 degrees so that the top is at the left.
    • Adjust the size so that it fits the canvas.
  4. Use Corel PHOTO-PAINT to improve contrast:
    • With the image select, go to Bitmaps $\rightarrow$ Edit Bitmaps ...
    • This will open up the image in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 2019
    • Hit CTRL + B to open the Brightness/Contrast window.
    • Increase the Brightness (75%) and the Contrast (100%).
    • Toggle on the Preview button. When satisfied, click on OK.
    • Hit CTRL + S to save. This will apply the changes to the image in CoreDRAW.
  5. Identify for the right map
    • Go to /media/shareX/Rat Brain Atlas/ on fishfish
    • Open the file RAT_BRAIN_ATLAS.pdf and scroll to the horizontal slices (Figures 181-207).
    • Identify the figure that most closely resemble the features on the image. Note the figure number on the top right.
    • Find the corresponding blue EPS file in the Fig 1-208e EPS Blue Labelled folder and copy it to your working directory.
  6. Import the EPS file for the map
    • Hit CTRL + I to import. Use default settings.
    • Drag the map out of the canvas.
    • Select the map and hit CTRL + U to ungroup.
  7. Delete the white background
    • Click on the white background. Initially, the outline will be selected instead.
    • Hold down on ALT as you click again. The color shown at the bottom object properties bar should be white.
    • Hit delete to remove the white background.
  8. Change the color of texts
    • Go to Edit $\rightarrow$ Select All $\rightarrow$ Text to select all texts
    • Click on a color (for example, yellow) from the palette at the right.
  9. (Optional) Change the color of outlines
    • Hit CTRL + F for the Find and Replace window.
    • From the drop down menu, select Replace Objects.
    • For the Choose Color
    • Under Find, choose Outlines and select cyan (CMYK = [100, 0, 0, 0]) for the color.
    • Under Replace, select green (CMYK = [100, 0, 100, 0]) for the color.
    • Click on Replace All.
  10. Align map with image

    • Click and drag to select all objects for the map and hit CTRL + G to group.
    • Drag and resize appropriately to overlay the features (especially the ventricles) against the image as much as possible.
